WILLOW by Alison Syme. 2014. Reaktion Books

Available from Amazon (£20.89).

Review
This is a fascinating book about Willows, with an emphasis on the social and cultural rather than the cultivation or utilitarian uses of willows.  The Natural History chapter casts a wide net, including a short survey of willow species around the world, their place in ecosystems, the history of their use for basketry, medicine and many other things.  The main chapters cover willow in ritual and religion, basketry and art using willow, and depictions of willow in artworks (pottery, painting and so on) and a final chapter covers the presence of willows in gardens (both as ornament and useful tree).  There are extensive lists of references and further reading.

The strengths of this book lie in its international breadth, unusual in books written in English, and in its encyclopaedic description of willow in art and culture including a fascinating section on the willow pattern.  It is written in an accessible style and fills an important gap in current literature about willows.

It is one of a series by this publisher on a range of plant species.
